Switchable Hot Lead from the Headlight Nacelle

When you need it hot!

Us Road King Riders  who like to have our gadgets and gadget chargers with us on the road, often find it desirable to have a hot lead on the bike without the need for the ignition being on. And those of us with gadgets on the bars often want a full time hot lead inside the nacelle, to avoid stringing new wires back to the battery.

The accessory switch on the nacelle provides power to a four pin Deutsch connector located just in front of the battery compartment under the seat. This connector carries leads for running lights, brake lights, ground, and auxiliary power from the nacelle switch, which normally requires that the ignition be either on or in the accessory position. The drawing and description below will show you how to eliminate the ignition switch from the process, and provide power to the connector any time you want it.

The nacelle switch draws it's power from a 10 or 15 amp accessory fuse at the fuse panel (behind the left side cover) through an Orange wire with red tracer. What you want to do is relocate its power source to the hot side of the main breaker, so the switch will not require the use of the ignition switch to operate.

This allows you to power a GPS, radio, or cell phone charger while the bike is turned off, but still allows you to switch the power on and off via the nacelle switch.

This is done by cutting the Orange and red wire loose from the fuse panel, and either re-routing it or extending it up to the hot side of the main breaker.

The blue wire shown above is the added extension to connect the orange with red tracer wire to the main breaker hot lead. An alternative method would be to pull the orange and red wire from an opening in the protective sleeving under the seat and just route it over to the main breaker. Either way, be sure to add an inline spade fuse of 10 or 15 amp rating to the wire!

Alternatively, you can slice open the sleeving further up the line and cut the Orange and Red wire there, leaving plenty of wire left from the fuse in case you ever want to put it back the way it originally was, or use that fuse circuit for something else. (Just make absolutely sure you are cutting the correct wire!!!!

If you want switchable power at the nacelle, you can simply tap into the orange wire from the switch connector (on the bike harness side!), and if you should  need a full time hot source in the nacelle without the benefit of a switch, you can tap into the Orange with red tracer wire at the same area (this is not recommended).

Now you can charge your cell phone or iPod while you're having lunch, or leave your GPS on the whole day without having to switch it over to battery backup when you stop for a break.
